ACTIVITY DURING WWII

PROMOTED TO COLONEL AND COMMANDANT OF CADETS AT TEXAS A&M COLLEGE. STRENGTHENED THE CADET CORPS BY 6,000; SEPTEMBER 1940. REASSIGNMENT CAME BEFORE 1940 ENDED FOR DUTY IN THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS AND WAS PROMOTED TO BRIGADIER GENERAL; JANUARY 29, 1941. BECAME COMMANDER OF THE HARBOR DEFENSES OF MANILA AND SUBIC BAY DURING THE JAPANESE INVASION OF THE BATAAN PENINSULA, 1941. GIVE 5,000 MEN AND FOUR FORTS TO DEFEND ON CORREGIDOR, HIS PHILIPPINE COAST ARTILLERY HELD OUT UNTIL MAY 6, 1942. WITH THE ALLIED COMMANDER OF THE PHILIPPINES, GENERAL JONATHAN WAINWRIGHT, THEY SURRENDERED THE CORREGIDOR GARRISON. WAS TAKEN PRISONER OF WAR BY THE JAPANESE AND INTERRED IN MANCHURIA UNTIL AUGUST 1945. AWARDS INCLUDE: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS AND 2 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDALS.
