SERVED AS A LIEUTENANT COMMANDER AND AS Commanding Officer of the armed guard aboard the USS Samuel Parker, which protected supply ships. In July 1943 near Sicily, he and his crew destroyed 11 enemy planes and was awarded the Silver Star.
