ACTIVITY DURING WWII

ENLISTED AS A PRIVATE WITH THE 39TH FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION AND UNDERWENT HIS BASIC TRAINING AT CAMP SHELBY, MISSISSIPPI. WAS COMMISSIONED A 2ND LIEUTENANT AFTER COMPLETING OFFICER CANDIDATE SCHOOL (OCS) AT FORT SILL, OKLAHOMA. RETURNED TO HIS SAME UNIT, WITH WHICH HE SERVED UNTIL HIS DEATH. TOOK PART IN OPERATION TORCH, LANDED NEAR CASABLANCA IN NORTHWEST AFRICA. SERVED WITH THE 3RD AND 5TH ARMIES IN AFRICA, TUNISIA, SICILY AND ITALY. SINCE HE WAS AN ATTORNEY IN CIVILIAN LIFE, HE WAS SOMETIMES DETAILED TO THAT DUTY TO ASSIST WITH COURTS MARTIAL. WAS PROMOTED TO 1ST LIEUTENANT AND WAS LATER KILLED NEAR NAPLES, ITALY ON OCTOBER 1, 1943. WAS AWARDED THE SILVER STAR AND PURPLE HEART.
