Served as a Corporal and as a Tank Bow Gunner of Company C, Fourth Tank Battalion, Fourth Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on enemy-held Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, during February 1945. Awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action.
