Served as a Captain. He served in the Pacific Theater of operations downing one enemy airplane in aerial combat in 1942, before returning to the United States to train in the P-47 Thunderbolt. Deploying then to England, he became an ACE and destroyed another 8 enemy aircraft in aerial combat, plus 6.5 more on the ground while strafing enemy airfields, before being forced down due to engine trouble and taken as a Prisoner of War on July 2, 1944. Awarded the silver star for gallantry in action and the Distinguished flying cross with four bronze oak leaf clusters and the Prisoner of war medal.
