Served as a Major while participating in aerial flight in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations as a pilot of a P-47 type aircraft, 319th Fighter Squadron, 325th Fighter Group, Fifteenth Air Force. He was captured by Japanese forces after he was shot down on 12 July 1945, and was held as a Prisoner of War until his return to U.S. Military Control at the end of hostilities in September 1945. Awarded the silver star for gallantry in action and the prisoner of war medal.
